Toyota Hilux Safety: Electronic Brake Force Distribution EBD

Toyota Hilux Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)

It forms part of our ‘Active Braking with intelligence (AB-i)’. It helps keep HiLux more stable and balanced when braking, particularly when the vehicle needs to stop suddenly.

Toyota Hilux Stability and balance

Working together with ABS and Brake Assist (BA), EBD responds to sudden stops by redistributing the brake force. Wheels with more braking effectiveness receive more brake force; wheels with less effectiveness receive less brake force, maximising braking power. EBD senses the weight transfer of the vehicle during cornering or braking, and adjusts braking pressure distribution to each wheel to maximise efficiency.

EBD is great when there’s a heavy load in the back and a sudden stop is required. Sensors recognise the extra load on the rear axle, and EBD takes into account the extra weight and applies more braking to the rear wheels. EBD is also smart enough to know if it’s just the driver in the HiLux. When there is no load in the back, it applies more braking force to the front wheels and less to the rear, because the front wheels will now have the most effective stopping power.

No skidding

EBD also controls the brake forces between the left and right wheels when brakes are applied while cornering. It’s another way that HiLux helps to improve braking performance. EBD is standard on all 4×4 SR5 Double-Cab models and is available as part of an option package on all 4×4 SR Double-Cab Pick-up models
